1971 Plymouth Duster Gallery

All updates on my Duster can now be
found in our tech forums, MoparTech.net!

Here are some pictures of my "NEW" Duster and the progress on it.  The plans I have for it include taking the complete drive train from the 1975 Duster I have and putting it in this one and making the '75 into a driver.  I plan on putting a mild 340 back in it when I finish this one.

Part I  |  Part II

This is the first time I saw the car.  I didn't know what to expect. Here is a shot of the interior after I stripped it down while on the rotisserie.  I'll have to do some repair work on the floor pans.
This is a picture of it in my driveway on the rotisserie.  This is the ONLY way to do it! After about 8 hours of using a 2,250 lb. pressure washer, this is how the undercarriage came out.  I got all the undercoating off that I could.  It was at least 1/4 in. thick in places.
The wheel-wells were opened up to take on larger tires.  Thanks go to www.bigblockdart.com for the helpful info.  To see the way I did it, go here. Here is a great shot showing just how much room can be gained from enlarging your wheel-wells and moving the springs inboard to the frame.  These fit before, but it was close.  Look at it now!
The rear springs were moved inboard using the MP relocation kit.  Note:  The MP kit comes with the wrong spring seats.  You have to get the Moroso seats.  The centering hole on the MP seat is too big. We got the spring mounting holes perfect BEFORE welding them in solid.  It wasn't really that hard to do.  Although I was a little scared about this before we started, having never done this before.
I sprayed a thin coat of undercoating under the car.  Actually, it was spray-in truck bedliner mixed with 25% laquer thinner.  It's much easier to clean and is much more durable than the 3M stuff. This is the first time it had any new paint on the car.  I don't think it came out too bad.  It's the same as the body is going to be later, 2000 Viper Steel Grey Pearl.  I used PPG single-stage acrylic urethane with an HVLP gun.
We installed the engine and tranny as a unit already attached to the K-frame from under the car, headers and all. This is the same engine & tranny from the '75 Duster.

Installation of the 8pt cage is almost completed.

The floor pans were replaced.  All of the ignition will be under the dash to clean things up under the hood.  This also shows the Painless 12-circuit wiring harness going in.  I'm VERY pleased with the harness. The engine bay is almost complete.  All that's left is to put the carb and distributor on and fire it up!
This is the Sharktooth grille that will be installed.  I had a friend completely restore it down to the correct argent silver.  Thank you Brian.  It sure looks NOS to me! This is under the fuel cell in the rear.  The factory spare tire well was removed and a custom floor was made for the 15 gal. Triangle Engineering fuel cell.  There are sill a few wires to tie up.  I forgot to enclose the sump per NHRA specs.  I will fix it later.
The dash is almost complete.  There is another switch to be installed for the ignition.  Autometer Ultra-Lites help me keep an eye on things.   We finished up the 8-pt cage.  It came out great.  When the car gets into the 10's, we'll add the front halo and posts to make it a 10-pt.  A very big Thank You  to my good friend Randy for all the hard work and welding.
The gauges.  Don't worry, I have an Ultra-Lite 5" tach that will go on the A-pillar just above the dash. I got it fired up last weekend.  Now it's REALLY getting to me.  I still have a couple of things to do to finish the engine bay.  The coil wire will NOT be coming out of the wiper-motor hole.  I have an MSD firewall pass-through to install.
Almost done under the hood.  I still have to add the inline billet fuel filter and I'm changing throttle cable brackets.  I have a billet CSI piece. I used some .040 aluminum to seal off where the back seat used to be.  We mis-judged where the hump was, but it was easily patched.  This will be carpeted black like the rest of the interior.

The car was completely stripped down to the metal in preparation for the paint and body work.  I went through 3 layers of paint and primer before I hit metal.
